VP 455 - Breed Discrimination; A Visual Study

About The Artist

Emily Cawley is an undergraduate student working towards her Bachelor's degree in Visual and Performing Arts from Worcester State University. Emily also holds a degree in  Animal Science from Becker College. As an artist, she enjoys creating conceptual art which synthesizes her passion for animals and acrylic paint into cohesive works of art.   As a strong advocate for animal welfare, particularly canines in shelter settings, Emily's latest series focuses on shifting social perceptions of "dangerous" dogs towards a more compassionate mindset.

Conceptually, this new work aims to create a visual representation of discrimination towards certain breeds of dogs through the use of color and narrative to explain how it can affect their health, welfare, and life experiences.

My role as an artist is to open people's eyes and minds to serious, yet largely ignored topics in a way that avoids lecture. Anyone can research said topics, but an artist has the rare opportunity to teach a lesson by playing with emotions and questioning the status quo all with simple strokes of paint.  Art often has a way of explaining problems in the world around us in a way that words cannot.
