The artist I connect with and am inspired by is Yoko Ono. She was born in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan and has had an extensive career in multimedia and performance art. Though our cultural background is very different from one another (as well as the pieces we create) I do feel that there is a commonality. Many of Ono's performance pieces serve to open viewer's eyes to things that are going on in the world around them. A work that comes to mind is "Cut Piece" which she performed in 1964. Here, she sat on stage and invited the audience to cut off and keep a piece of her clothing- commenting on the passive objectification of women. Though my art (specifically my thesis) is unrelated, I do think it is possible to establish a dialog between her work and mine because we both aim to inform people about issues of the world in a non-direct way.
