What is Breed Discrimination?

Breed Discrimination (BD), also known as Breed Specific Legislation, are laws and regulations that prevent the ownership of certain dog breeds based solely on their appearance. Commonly affected breeds include Pitbulls, Doberman Pinschers, Boxers, Bull Terriers, and Mastiffs who are often viewed as more aggressive and dangerous than other breeds. Often, BD can result in overcrowding in shelters, unnecessary euthanasia, higher home insurance for those who own these breeds, and improper vet care. Several states in the U.S. have already banned Breed Specific Legislation but there is still much work to be done.
